About

Built by an artist, for artists.

ARTU exists because the people who make the music we all consume daily are among the lowest-paid and least-respected workers in modern culture. That has to end.

The founder

Edd Bateman has been a professional bassist since the age of 14. Twenty-five years touring the world. At 39, no house, no guaranteed income - despite a career requiring more skill and dedication than most respected professions.

A doctor trains seven years and earns well. A musician trains longer, with no career ladder, no minimum wage, no union that actually works, and no seat at any decision-making table. Meanwhile streaming pays pennies, charts are flooded with manufactured content, and arts funding is cut on purpose.

ARTU is the response.

Principle

Unapologetic

We won't dilute the message, lower the standard, or apologise for taking craft seriously.

Principle

Prestige over inclusivity

Being an ARTU artist is earned. The community is curated so that membership means something.

Principle

Not left or right

We follow truth, not political tribes. The argument is cultural - and economic - first.

Principle

Anti-algorithm

No feeds tuned to keep you scrolling. No AI-generated music. No auto-tune fixes. No adverts.

Principle

Robin Hood pricing

Cost price for infrastructure. Zero commission on sales. Revenue from members, not extraction.

Principle

Artist-owned

You own your work, your audience and your data. ARTU never inserts itself between you and them.

The bigger argument

Artists have historically held governance roles - court musicians in Akbar's India, the griots of West Africa. Modern government is dominated by left-brain data obsession. The emotional intelligence of artists is missing from the room.

Artists belong on government committees. In diplomacy we should send musicians, not soldiers - shared concerts between conflicting communities work. Music in public spaces measurably reduces crime. United globally, musicians would be one of the largest communities on the planet. ARTU is how that community gets organised.

Organic only

Real humans. Real instruments. Real takes.

No AI-generated music. No auto-tune patch-ups. No synthetic vocals pretending to be people. ARTU exists to look after the musicians who actually make the music - and to make sure the audience can tell the difference again.

  • No AI music
We don't host, promote, or pay out on machine-generated tracks.
  • No auto-tune fixes
Performances stand on their own. Imperfect, alive, human.
  • Musicians first
Every decision is judged by whether it makes an artist's life better.
